Lillie Bell Marshall was born in Memphis, TN on June 21, 1946 to the late Alfred F. Marshall and Mae W. Hayes Marshall. One of 13 children, she accepted Christ at an early age and for many years attended Old Salem Baptist Church in Memphis, TN. While there, she served as the youth Sunday school teacher. She later joined First Baptist Church in Millington, TN where she served as the youth Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. She also held membership at Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri during her residency there.
A talented seamstress and baker, in her early years it wasn’t uncommon for Lillie to be called upon to make and alter clothes for her family and friends as well as bake delicious cakes and pies for birthdays and family gatherings. Lillie had a sweet spirit and quiet demeanor. Some might have called her an introvert, but she did enjoy a good conversation with family members and she had a love of puzzles, word finds and board games, especially Scrabble.
In 1964, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and progressed to Trezvant Vocational School where she learned how to use her stellar organizational skills in the area of clerical work and office administration. During her career, she enjoyed employment with International Harvester, First Tennessee Bank, and Frank Marshall Insurance.
However, the job that seemed to give Lillie the most joy was that of being a mother to her only child, Jae Henderson. She also cherished her brothers Alfred F. Marshall (Etta) Charles Marshall, Robert Marshall, Marion Marshall, Frank Marshall (Ida), and William Marshall and her sisters Louis Marshall Spiller, Bobbie Marshall Cody (Calvert), Joyce Marshall Guyton (Willie) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends. She was preceeded in death by her parents and siblings Edward Marshall and Carrie Marshall.
